The Berkeley Square accountants set out how data matching is prompting compliance checks even where returns are correct.
A quietly useful piece from the tax investigation team at Milsted Langdon, who note that an HMRC enquiry is no longer reserved for those who have made a mistake. Over the past year, they say, a growing number of compliance checks have been triggered by third-party information, automated data matching and targeted campaigns.
The note draws on recent cases: a nudge letter about foreign income that had in fact been declared, simply under the wrong heading, and a relief claim that widened into questions on pensions before closing with no adjustment. Their sensible advice is that such letters should never be ignored, and that even a clean return can take real time to defend.
A sound read for any member who prefers to be prepared. The full article is on the Milsted Langdon website.
